What is AI automation—and where should you start?

An explanation you can use to make a real decision, not a reason to automate everything.

Start with the task, not the label

Think about a piece of work that arrives repeatedly: an inquiry, a set of notes, or a new content idea. The useful question is which part is predictable and which part needs interpretation. That is where your design begins.

Three different ways to get help

AI assistance means you ask for a draft or analysis and review it. Automation means a defined event or schedule starts a process. AI automation combines that process with a model-driven step, such as interpreting a request or drafting a summary. Make’s explanation is a useful reference for this distinction.

The five-part pattern we recommend

Use this planning model: start, understand, draft, review, act. Name the input. Specify the bounded interpretation or transformation. Define the output. Decide how it is checked. State what action is allowed after approval. This is an Automately planning framework, not a claim that every platform has the same five modules.

An example without the hype

Suppose you receive a project inquiry. A basic rule can record its submission ID. AI can draft a summary from the text. A validation step can check required fields. A person can review the draft and choose the next action. You have improved a process without allowing the model to invent pricing or email a stranger.

Where an agent is different

An agent may select tools or decide intermediate steps instead of following only a prewritten path. That can be useful when the path genuinely varies. It also makes permissions and stopping conditions more important. Do not choose an agent merely because it sounds more advanced.

Your first experiment

Pick a low-consequence task you already understand. Run the improved version manually on three examples. Write down what goes wrong. Only then decide whether a trigger, integration, or schedule is worth maintaining. A good first result is a usable draft and a better understanding of the process—not an unattended business.

Make it practical.

Choose a task you already do. Work through one original recipe and check the result.
